Your nakshatra is your birth star: the one of 27 lunar mansions the Moon sat in when you were born. Each one spans 13°20′ of sky and has 4 padas. Enter your date, time and place of birth to find yours. It is free, with no sign-up.

Example: Born 15 August 1947 at midnight in Delhi, the birth star is Pushya, pada 1.

How well do you know your birth time?

The Moon changes pada every few hours, so the exact time matters here.

Questions

What is a nakshatra?

A nakshatra is one of 27 equal slices of the sky along the Moon's path, each 13°20′ wide. Your janma nakshatra is the one the Moon was in at your birth. It's one part of your kundli (birth chart), and it doesn't tell the whole story.

What is a pada?

Each nakshatra is split into 4 padas (quarters) of 3°20′ each, which makes 108 padas in total. The tool will show your pada next to your nakshatra.

Do I need my exact birth time?

For a sure answer, yes. For a first look, no. The Moon changes nakshatra about once a day, so with no time the star is sure on only about 4 days in 100. With the part of the day it is sure on about 75 in 100. Otherwise I show the two or three stars the Moon passed through, and when.

Is the nakshatra finder free?

Yes. It's free, and you can see your result without making an account.

Which system does it use?

It uses the Indian sidereal (Vedic) system with the Lahiri ayanamsa, the common choice in India. Western (tropical) astrology measures positions differently, so the two won't line up.
